Functional Analysis: Basic Principles and Methods.

ABSTRACT

Many patients who seek behavior therapy come with multiple behavior problems. They also present with multiple causal variables that affect those problems. A challenge for the behavior therapist is to understand the functional relations among those behavior problems and causal variables and to know where to focus treatment efforts that have the most benefit for the patient. The functional análisis integrates information from behavioral assessment with a patient and the research literature to help the behavior therapist make the best treatment decision. Underlying principles and methods of the functional analysis will be presented, such as dimensions of behavior problems, bidirectional causal relations for behavior problems, moderator and mediator causal variables, proximal and distal causal relations, the conditional and dynamic nature of causal relations, how to use Functional Analytic Clinical Case Diagrams to plan treatments, and the cost-benefits of the functional analysis with patients.

RESUMEN

Muchos de los pacientes que acuden a la terapia conductual llegan con múltiples problemas de conducta. Además, también presentan múltiples variables causales que afectan a esos problemas. Constituye un reto para el terapeuta de conducta intentar entender las relaciones funcionales entre los problemas de conducta y las variables causales, y tratar de conocer dónde centrar los esfuerzos del tratamiento para que tengan los máximos beneficios posibles para el paciente. El análisis funcional integra la información de la evaluación conductual de un paciente y la literatura científica, para ayudar al terapeuta de conducta a tomar una decisión sobre el mejor tratamiento posible. Se presentarán los principios y métodos que del análisis funcional, tales como las dimensiones de los problemas de conducta, las relaciones causales bidireccionales, las variables causales moderadoras o mediadoras, las relaciones causales más próximas o distantes, la naturaleza condicional y dinámica de las relaciones causales, cómo utilizar los Diagramas de Análisis Funcional del Caso Clínico, y los costes-beneficios del análisis funcional con los pacientes.
